Shrine at Stockwell Station The shrine, which measures about 2 metres squared, was set up shortly
after Jean Charles' death. Since then the shrine has received hundreds
of cards and messages of sympathy and support for the family from people
worldwide shocked and sickened by both Jean's sudden unnecessary death
and the response and handling of the matter afterwards by the police and
government. These words are from one of the people who maintains the shrine: "Personally, when I heard of Jean's death, I immediately contacted my son to make sure that it was not him. Although I believed at the time the version that the police had killed a suspected bomber, I also had a strong sense that this could have been a wild card response to the failed bombings of the day before. However, as soon as news came out that it was indeed a mistaken identity and that there had been a cover up of some sorts, I got involved. We are committed to keeping the space alive until such time as a permanent memorial has been erected in his honour, albeit if justice is never achieved. For the friends and families of the people who died on the 7th and 22nd July, there is no getting away from their loss and the least we can do is to ensure that Jean Charles is given the honour too of commemoration that the other victims have been given. We want his family to know this. Even if or when they return to Brazil, they should know that we here in London will remember and will honour this. Perhaps this will make it easier for them to let go, and return home, should they need or want to." If you would like to send a message to the shrine, the address is: |
