Key public interest issues regarding Jean’s killing

The killing of Jean Charles de Menezes by security forces is perhaps one of the most bungled police investigations ever witnessed in the UK. The Menezes family have paid the blood price for a systematic failure of police intelligence and of policing tactics and to add insult to injury were then subjected to series of misinformation, lies and interference from senior figures in the Metropolitan police. Below, we outline some of the main questions of public interest that have been raised since Jean’s killing. It is paramount that these questions are answered urgently.

  • The complete breakdown in intelligence.
  • Iain Blair deliberately trying to stop an IPCC investigation.
  • The application of shoot-to-kill policy and the political and legal implications of this.
  • The doctoring of the police log and attempts by the police to perverting the course of justice.
  • The missing CCTV tapes from Stockwell station.
  • The use of dum dum bullets to kill Jean, a type of bullet that is illegal in international warfare.
  • Police misinformation and lies put out immediately after jean was killed suggesting he was a terrorist, was acting suspiciously and was challenged and refused to co-operate.
  • The lack of public accountability and justice – on year on and nothing has changed in terms of policing policy as can be evidenced by the brutal shooting in Forest Gate of an innocent man. No officer has yet been prosecuted or disciplined for the Menezes killing giving the impression that the police in the UK are free to act with impunity.
